~~~~~ listening 6~~~~~~ Now the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES. A nickname is a shortened form of a person's name. A nickname also can be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames. These can help establish an identity, spread pride among citizens and build unity. A few years ago, some marketing and advertising experts were asked to name the best nickname for an American city. The winner was the nation’s largest city, New York. The top nickname was the Big Apple. You might wonder how New York got this nickname. In the early nineteen seventies, the city had many problems. The number of visitors was falling. So a campaign was launched to give the city a new image. The head of the New York Conventions and Visitors Bureau decided to call the city, The Big Apple. There are several explanations for where this name came from. Language expert Barry Popik studied the question and wrote about it on his website. He says John Fitz Gerald, a writer for a New York newspaper, used the name the Big Apple to mean New York in the nineteen twenties. Mr. Fitz Gerald wrote about horse races. He heard the name used by men who worked at a racetrack in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mister Fitz Gerald wrote: “The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.” In horse racing, the expression meant “the big time,” the place where large amounts of money could be won. The Big Apple became the name of a night club in the Harlem area of New York City in nineteen thirty-four. It also was the name of a popular dance and a hit song in the nineteen thirties. But it is not the only nickname for America’s largest city. Barry Popik’s website lists almost one hundred nicknames that describe New York. The best known are the Capital of the World. Empire City. Gotham. The City So Nice They Named It Twice. And the City That Never Sleeps. You can hear about the city in the song, “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra. This program was written by Shelley Gollust. I'm Barbara Klein. You can find more WORDS AND THEIR STORIES at voaspecialenglish.com. |
بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم ممنون خواهرم. یکی از مطالبه های جدی رهبر(حفظه الله ) یادگیری زبان هستش. اما در کنار این مطالبه این نکته را هم گوش زد کرده اند که این کتاب ها ی یادگیری زبان یکی از اصلی ترین حاملان فرهنگ غربی هستند. بنده مترجمی زبان انگلیسی می خونم و این فرهنگ غربی رو که توی منابع درسیمون موج میزنه رو خوب احساس میکنم. متاسفاته تقریبا همه منابع یادگیری زبان این مشکل رو دارند. چند وقت پیش کلی گشتم تا یک کتاب با فرهنگ درست برای درس دادن به بچه ها پیدا کنم اما نتیجه منفی بود. یکی از نیازهای مهم کشور تالیف این جور کتاب ها است تا کودکانمون رو از این تهاجم فرهنگی نجات بدیم. یکی از دانش آموزان دوره ی راهنمایی گفت که معلمشون تو آموزشگاه گفته که شراب خوردن ایرادی نداره !! متاسفانه آثار این گونه تهاجم فرهنگی ها نه تنها در دانش آموز بلکه تو خود استاد هم تاثیر میزاره . اکثر منابع حتی listening ها هم ناقل این فرهنگ هستن. این ها رو نوشتم تا بگم که شما هم تو انتخاب فایل ها دقت کنید. موفق باشید در پناه حق |
(۵/دی/۹۲ ۰:۲۸)پرنیان نوشته است: سلام بله ، حرفتون کاملا درسته....در واقعا آشنایی با فرهنگ های دیگه ایرادی نداره ،اما با همون شرطی که گفتید، یعنی اینکه اون فرهنگ تاثیر نذاره . مشکل هم همینجاست . این فرهنگ روی درصد خیلی پایینی از افراد تاثیر نمی ذاره. به عنوان مثال بنده به هیچ وجه نمیتونم ادعا کنم که اصلا از این فرهنگ تاثیر نپذیرفته ام. |
ترنسکرایب listening 8 ............... Balloon Man In 2009, there was a movie called Up. It was about an old man who used thousands of balloons to lift his house up into the sky and fly to South America. It was a fun and interesting movie, but it’s not a new idea. Over the years, several people have tried to build their own homemade aircrafts using balloons. An American man from Oregon named Kent Couch tried it in 2001. He tied 105 large balloons to a big chair. Then he filled the balloons with helium, a gas that is lighter than air. To keep his chair from flying up too high, he had bags filled with water attached to the chair. These bags acted as weights. If he wanted to go up, he just let some water out of the bags. Mr. Couch also carried a small knife with him. If he wanted to go down, he just popped a balloon. Couch took along a cell phone, a radio, and other equipment to help him fly. He also had a video camera to record the flight. Couch flew for nine hours in his homemade aircraft. At times, he reached heights of almost four thousand meters! It was his goal to fly to the next state, Idaho. However, dangerous weather forced him to land quickly in a field. He was all right, but the strong winds blew his aircraft away along with the camera. Mr. Couch was very disappointed because he thought that no one would believe him without seeing the video. However, one year later, the video camera and the other equipment were found by a farmer. They were about thirteen miles away from where Couch had landed. So, what made Kent Couch do such a crazy thing? According to him, it was a dream from childhood. He always wondered what it would be like to sit on a cloud. |
^^^Listening 10 ^^^ The Dragon An evil dragon lived in a castle in the remote southern mountains. One day the monster landed in a town. The dragon commanded the people, “Give me food now, or I will eat you!” The dragon lifted its wings so that its lungs could be completely filled with hot steam, and breathed it upon the people. A man turned into a stone statue! The people submitted and brought food. The dragon ate all of it and left. The people sent a boy to ask for help from a wise old man. He resided in a temple. The boy told the old man about the dragon. Then, the old man counseled the boy. “A meteor will fall in the northern sky. It will make a huge explosion. Find the meteor and bring it to me. I will use it to make a sword for you.” The boy did as the old man said. Soon, the sword was ready. “ Use this to kill the dragon. But be careful. You must cover yourself with weeds that smell bad. That will ensure that he does not smell you,” the man said. The boy traveled for many days to find the castle. He went to the upper level and opened a door. He could see the dragon’s tail. It was sleeping, so the boy killed it. Then, he took the dragon’s gold and jewelry and returned to his town. The people were happy. |
The Sinking City There is no city on earth like Venice, Italy. It has many famous old buildings and beautiful art museums. Every year, over 10 million tourists visit the city. The most unique thing about Venice is that instead of streets, it has canals. Canals are like rivers that run through the city. There are no cars in Venice. To get around, people must walk or use boats called water taxis. The canals add to the beauty of Venice. But they are also part of a big problem. Venice is located next to the Adriatic Sea. It was built on top of many small islands. These islands are surrounded by a large, saltwater pool called a lagoon. The lagoon is mostly separated from the sea. However, water can still get into the lagoon at three places. When there are storms, the level of the Adriatic Sea can rise. When the sea is high, it pushes water into the lagoon. This causes bad flooding in the city. People in Venice call this “acqua alta” or “high water.” There is another problem. The islands that the city sits on are slowly sinking. This is making the flooding worse. The seawater is damaging many of the old buildings. Some experts believe that Venice may sink over twenty centimeters in the next fifty years. However, there is a plan to save Venice. It is called Project MOSE. Workers are building huge gates at the three entrances to the sea. These gates can be raised to keep high seawater from entering the city. However, not everyone is happy about the idea. Scientists say that even though the flooding is bad for the city, it is good for the lagoon. The flooding replaces the old water in the lagoon with new, clean sea water. This helps to keep the animals and plants healthy. Some scientists worry that the gates will keep the water dirty. This could hurt fish and plants in the lagoon. |
